Kevin Matthews is pleased to announce he has moved back to his hometown of Thunder Bay, Ontario and is welcoming new clients.
In 2002, Kevin received his Bachelor of Commerce Degree (Honours) from Lakehead University and his Law Degree from the University of Manitoba in 2006.
While working for the Legal Clinic at the University of Manitoba in 2004, Kevin began focusing on the defence of marginalized individuals. This work included advocating for hundreds of accused before the Provincial Courts of Manitoba and appearing on behalf of individuals at various tribunals (i.e. Employment Insurance Tribunal and Housing Tribunal). He also provided advice to individuals and businesses on criminal and administrative issues, prepared legal memos and trained second year students.
Following law school, Kevin and his wife moved to Ottawa to pursue his career in criminal law. He had a tremendous opportunity to article for Norm Boxall at the Ottawa criminal defence firm: Bayne Sellar Boxall. During his articles, Kevin was also fortunate to work for partners Don Bayne & Mark Ertel as they defended one of the only corporations in Canadian history charged with criminal negligence causing death (R. v. Ontario Power Generation (2007, OCJ Ottawa, Justice Belanger)).
Kevin started practicing law as a sole practitioner with concentration in criminal trial and appellate advocacy. In 2007, he joined James Foord and Graham Murray as an associate and later became a junior partner with the expanded firm: Foord Davies Murray www.foorddavieslawyers.com. While working in Ottawa, he had the opportunity to learn and conduct trials with some of Canada's leading Criminal lawyers.
Kevin has represented clients in the Ontario Court of Justice, the Superior Court of Justice and the Ontario Court of Appeal. Kevin's several significant victories have expanded his experience and strengthened his advocacy.
At the end of 2009, Kevin moved with his family to the Niagara Region to begin work as a regional prosecutor. This position provided an important perspective and valued experience in Highway Traffic and Municipal Prosecutions.
Kevin shares his enthusiasm on moving home to Thunder Bay stating, "I am excited to be focusing all of my energies once again into building a law practice and assisting clients. Thunder Bay is our home and I look forward to assisting individuals and businesses facing charges."
Kevin is currently a member of the Thunder Bay Law Association, The Defence Counsel Association of Ottawa and a past member of the Criminal Lawyers' Association.
